Laura is a native South African Composer and Orchestrator for screen, stage and concert, currently living and working in London, UK. Being the (admittedly unfinished) product of a rolling-stone, multi-cultural upbringing, she likes to write music that takes you somewhere.
She writes in an intrinsically cinematic and vivid style across the varied scope of her music for media, stage and concert performance, fusing the Orchestral and Classical idioms with eclectic world music influences (notably those of Africa and Anatolia via complex personal relationships with the musical cultures of those lands).
In her work for Screen and Stage, Laura is a believer in the unwavering emotive power of theme, motif and melody, as the natural ally and crystalliser of visual and dramatic storytelling.
A sensitive yet salient musical colourist, with a passion for beautiful Orchestration, (having received mentorship from eminent film orchestrator Conrad Pope), she conjures place, scale and narrative through detailed, shaded but always lush orchestral sound worlds; woven together (and at times asunder) by her distinctive, nearly conversational lyricism, and arresting harmonies.
Laura is passionate about working on projects with a conscience, amplifying unheard voices and perspectives through the arts.
Recent work includes award-winning feature-length documentary “Elephant Refugees” , now streaming on Amazon Prime and Apple TV ( dircted by Academy Award- winning doc maker Louise Hogarth, and narrated by Game of Thrones’s Jerome Flynn) : an account of elephants fleeing poachers and drought in Botswana , and finding unlikely help from a well-meaning family in over their heads. The film offered a profound opportunity to revisit musical memories of her childhood in Southern Africa.
Versatile in her craft, she writes for both screen and stage - including dance, most notably creating 2 original scores for the English National Ballet : "Unsilenced" and "Give my Love to the Sunrise".
In 2023 she contributed to the music for a new stage piece "Imparator" (Emperor) for iconic Turkish film and theatre-veteran and activist Genco Erkal, together with frequent collaborator Nazım Çınar
2024 includes a network series centred on the ancient tale of the Epic of Gilgamesh (in production), a new documentary for Academy -Award winning documentary-maker Louise Hogarth, and a vocal work for Cape Town Opera (South Africa) which will be performed on tour at the Beijing Music Festival in October 2024, in Beijing and Shanghai at the 'Temple of Heaven' in Beijing and at Shanghai Symphony Hall in Shanghai.
The performances mark her Composer debut in Asia.
